Providing Cancer Support at Senior Home Companions

October 8, 2020

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and it is during this time that we focus on the support that we offer to our beloved clients who are currently battling some form of cancer, as well as support for their families. We are proud to count many of our older adult clients as cancer fighters and survivors, and our unique in-home support and skilled care services can assist your aging loved one through their cancer journey as well.

How Common is Breast Cancer?

With a current risk of 1 in 8 that a U.S. woman will develop breast cancer, it is estimated by the American Cancer Society that about 276,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer will be diagnosed in 2020. Aside from skin cancer, breast cancer is the most common cancer among women and is the second-leading cause of cancer death (after lung cancer). Although cancer may seem common, especially as our bodies age, our Senior Home Companion caregivers treat each of our clients with individualized care for their specific needs and wants.

How Does SHC Support Cancer Fighters?

Our in-home care supports all clients with day-to-day responsibilities and social engagement. Clients undergoing cancer treatment will also benefit from transportation and accompaniment to medical appointments, pharmacy/grocery errand runs, medication reminders and other similar support. SHC caregivers can keep the household running smoothly, prepare meals and encourage relevant exercise or hobbies as well.

Does SHC Offer Medical Support Services?

As companion caregivers, our SHC professionals offer comforting care in tandem with your medical team. We can help clients who are residing in an assisted living or skilled nursing facility stay engaged in appropriate daily activities, and ensure that their non-medical needs are met properly.

SHC caregivers can also partner with medical staff to assist clients who are transitioning home after a medical procedure or cancer treatment throughout their recovery journey. We are proud to help clients meet their rehabilitation goals in the return to an engaged lifestyle at home or in a care facility.

What is Family Matters Counseling?

As our loved ones age, considering care options and legal/financial relationships becomes an important task, especially in light of a cancer diagnosis. However, we also know that this can be a difficult conversation to have with your parent or family members.

With Family Matters Counseling from SHC, we can help facilitate discussions that lead to fruitful plans for in-home care, future living arrangements, legal decisions and the potential end of life choices. Our Family Matters program is led by President David Morgan, whose unique experience in ministry and senior care will guide your family through these critical decisions in a caring, thoughtful and thorough way.

If you are interested in meeting a compassionate and caring team to work with your aging loved one battling cancer, schedule a consultation with the professionals at Senior Home companions today. It is truly an honor to assist these special clients within our Indiana and Florida service areas.
