Frequently Asked Questions

What kind of services do you provide?

SHC provides non-medical, in-home services such as homemaking, companionship, personal assistance and help with day-to-day living. Because we’re not a franchise, we have the flexibility to personalize your services to meet your needs. Please see our Personalized Care page for a detailed list.

How do we begin services?

We’ll meet for a complementary consultation/assessment with you and family members to discuss your needs. After you determine the services and schedule that are right for you, services can begin within just a few hours.

Is there a deposit required?

No deposit is required for routine non-medical companion care. However, non-medical companion care within the hospice setting is slightly different and does require a deposit in certain circumstances.

Can I change my schedule?

Definitely. We work with you to develop a personalized plan of services based on your unique needs. If and when they change in any way, your services and schedule can too.

How are caregivers selected?

We rigorously screen potential caregivers—fewer than 20 percent of applicants meet our high standards. Several members of our leadership team interview every potential caregiver, and we conduct thorough background checks on each one, including references, criminal background and driving records. All caregivers are bonded and insured. We’ll be happy to discuss our screening process in more detail during your complimentary assessment.

Can I select my caregivers?

Most definitely. You may interview several caregivers before your service begins. Our in-depth matching process focuses on meeting your unique needs. We choose caregivers with the skills, background and personality that are the best match for providing you the services you select.

Will I have the same caregiver?

Yes, for as long as you choose to. We have nearly two decades of experience matching clients and caregivers, resulting in hundreds of consistent, long-term client/caregiver relationships. We know how important a consistent relationship is to good care.

What are your rates?

During your complementary consultation/assessment a rate sheet will be provided. You always have the right to determine the rate you wish to pay a caregiver. Clients often choose to show caregivers their appreciation for exceptional care by compensating them at a higher rate.

Whom do I contact if I have concerns or a question?

Every client has a dedicated care manager supported by a client coordinator who maintains consistent communication with you, your family and your caregiver. Meeting your needs is our top priority—you always have direct access to a dedicated team member 24/7. We’ll handle your concerns personally and promptly.

Whose car will we take on appointments or errands?

Caregivers may use their car and be reimbursed for mileage or they may drive your car at no additional charge. You and your caregiver can decide which option works best.

Are services limited to seniors?

No. Our services are the perfect solution for people of any age who need assistance at home, such as when recovering from an illness or surgery.

Do you cover holidays?

Yes, caregivers serve clients on all major holidays.

Do you have references?

Yes, we’re happy to provide references from a long list of satisfied clients. We’ve built long-term relationships with hundreds of families over the nearly 25 years we’ve been helping people find the care they need.

Wouldn’t it be simpler to hire a friend, neighbor or find a volunteer?

Not necessarily. SHC caregivers are our employees so we handle the details associated with hiring a caregiver. That includes conducting screenings, driving record and criminal background checks, taxes, insurance and bonding. It’s our job to make sure you have consistent, quality service. If your regular caregiver is ill or needs time off, we provide another caregiver—you’re not scrambling to find someone to fill in. We also provide supervision and ongoing training.

Wouldn’t I save money by hiring a friend, neighbor or finding a volunteer to provide care?

It might seem that way, but there are costs and risks associated with hiring a friend, neighbor or finding a volunteer, rather than using an in-home care agency, that people often don’t consider. When you hire someone independently, you become the employer and are responsible for all of the taxes that go along with hiring an employee. If the individual gets hurt on the job, you are responsible for medical bills and any other expenses associated with the injury.
