Senior Nutrition and Heart Healthy Tips

February 12, 2020

We all know that February is the month of love, but did you also know that we celebrate American Heart Month in February? Here at Senior Home Companions in Central Indiana, we’d like to take a moment to spread awareness about heart disease. Review these heart healthy tips for seniors, as well as the ways that an SHC companion can assist with them.

Get Moving

Exercise is one of the best ways to prevent heart disease. The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute recommends around 2.5 hours of exercise each week, or 30 minutes for five days a week. SHC caregivers can make sure that you make it to a senior fitness class, or they can take walks and do other light exercise activities together.

Enjoy Healthy Foods

Eating healthfully is another key to preventing heart disease, with a diet that is low in sodium and saturated fats. Make sure that you are eating your fruits and veggies, plus whole grains and healthy proteins. Our companions love work together on senior meal planning and preparation to help ensure that healthy choices are being made.

Maintain a Healthy Weight

A healthy weight for your body is very important and can reduce the risk of not only heart disease but also stroke, diabetes and more. Social support is extremely beneficial when meeting weight goals, so your companion caregiver from SHC can help encourage and support goals in that maintenance. They can also provide transportation to weight loss support groups, doctor’s appointments and other health meetings.

Watch your Stress Levels

Stress and anxiety can contribute to heart risks, as can poor quality sleep. Our caregivers are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, so they can provide companionship for those who are lonely or anxious and even overnight care for seniors with anxiety or trouble sleeping. You can also adjust the schedule at any time if your family’s needs change.

Track your Goals

Knowing your numbers for blood pressure, cholesterol and blood sugar/diabetes can go a long way in preventing heart conditions. Ensure that you are getting regular check-ups, and if you need to keep any heart issues under control with medication, an SHC companion can help provide medication or care reminders.

If you are seeking a caregiver for your loved one, don’t hesitate to reach out to Senior Home Companions online or at 317-251-0441. Our caregivers can even work in conjunction with a nursing home or skilled in-home nurse to provide the friendly companionship to maintain not just a healthy but also a happy heart.
