Celebrate Spring with Senior- Friendly Activities

With spring just around the corner, we are excited to welcome some sunshine and warm weather to Indiana. To help you prepare for this exciting season we have rounded up 5 ways to celebrate spring with your aging loved ones. These senior-friendly activities are sure to brighten their day and help create everlasting memories together.

1.    Enjoy the Outdoors

After being cooped up indoors all winter, it will be great to get outside and get some fresh air and vitamin D!

If your loved ones are able to get outside make sure they are comfortable with plenty of layers. For older adults who are not mobile, open up the windows and let the fresh air in. You can even sit them outside the house to appreciate nature around them, or even add a little more fun by blowing bubbles!

As the weather starts to warm up, you may notice more colorful birds starting to appear. Hang a bird feeder near a large window so that your loved one can bird-watch whenever they’d like!

A few other ways to enjoy nature:

  • Take a walk around the neighborhood park
  • Eat a meal outside
  • Visit a plant nursery
  • Visit the farmer's market

2.    Decorate for Easter

It’s always fun to celebrate the seasons with festive decorations. We found some great DIY projects and lovely decor that you and your loved one can enjoy.

Color these spring-themed coloring pages and hang them up around the house to add a little pop of color indoors! We love these: Spring Branches, Cheerful Bees, & Lilies.

You could also make these fun non-toxic colored eggs to use for decoration, or have an egg hunt with the whole family. We also found pastel-colored paper chain garlands that can be hung around windows or doorways.

We also love these fun removable floral decals that can bring spring right into the room within a matter of minutes!

3.    Host a Family Gathering

Something many seniors enjoy the most is time spent with family and close friends! You can have a spring or Easter potluck gathering, and everyone can bring a fun spring dish to share.

Make this event even more fun by involving your loved one in the party planning process, cooking, and decorating!

4.    Create an Indoor Garden

Having plants around the house brings a little piece of nature indoors.

Spring is the perfect season to start an indoor herb garden, grow your outside flowers indoors, or get miniature trees like a bonsai or fiddle leaf fig tree!

If you like the greenery but not the maintenance, get some silk or plastic flowers/plants instead, Etsy has a ton of great, realistic options.

5.    Do some Spring Cleaning

Spring is the perfect time to encourage older adults to get rid of the unnecessary clutter that has been piling up. You can turn this chore into a meaningful activity by going through keepsakes and old photos together.

This activity often leads to reminiscing on special, pleasant memories together.
