Restoring Lives and Building Hope: A Conversation with Cindy and David Palmer
Transforming Lives Through Purposeful Design & Heart Change in Indianapolis
In this heartfelt episode of the Senior Home Companions Podcast, host Kirstin McCarthy is joined by David Palmer of Purposeful Design and his wife Cindy, who leads Heart Change Ministries. Together, they share moving stories of how God is using their ministries to heal, restore, and empower lives across Indianapolis. From addiction recovery to job readiness, family reunification to spiritual awakening, their testimony is a powerful reminder of grace and second chances.
Redemption Through Purposeful Work
David shares stories from Purposeful Design, a woodworking enterprise that trains and employs individuals overcoming addiction, incarceration, and homelessness. One craftsman described his past as a “wrecking ball.” Another, Ben, arrived homeless and skeptical of faith, only to leave as a believer, reading the Bible and starting a new career with benefits and purpose.
These aren’t just job stories—they’re life stories. “The real secret sauce is the Lord,” David explains. “We don’t know how to change lives. He does.”
Empowering Women Through Heart Change
While Purposeful Design focuses on men, Cindy leads Heart Change, a women’s ministry focused on healing through relationships, parenting classes, job support, and spiritual growth. The programs often intersect. Many women’s partners later seek help too—and are directed to Purposeful Design.
This synergy supports entire families. David shares how Heart Change housing has even provided shelter for Purposeful Design men, helping them stabilize and build community.
Faith, Marriage & Ministry: A Life of Service
David and Cindy reflect on how their shared mission shapes their marriage and daily life. They walk together often, asking, “Are you gaining altitude?”—a metaphor to check in emotionally and spiritually. They pray, advise, and collaborate regularly. Their unity is an anchor as they serve the city’s most vulnerable.
“We used to run a business together,” Cindy says. “Now we serve together. It feels like family.”
Choosing Proximity Over Comfort
Ten years ago, the Palmers left their comfortable life in Carmel for the Near East Side of Indianapolis. “Everything got smaller—our house, yard, and possessions,” David says, “but life got bigger.” Now they live among the people they serve, walking alongside them in faith and friendship.
“I used to think serving came with a cost. But really, you get back so much more.”
— David Palmer
